Great episode. I think that some words that my mentor said to me some months back just clicked into place. I didn’t understand before what he meant when he said that nothing is bad unless we think it is. Your episode has made me understand now. Thank you so much.

What a great way to put it. Nothing is bad unless we think it is. I can see how some might argue with that – for instance, someone would argue that car wrecks are bad, or that famine or war is bad. But I do agree that there is always something positive to find if we choose to look for it and focus upon it and not on the negative side of those things.

Learning to love things that we think are bad is a great way to live a less stressful life. I read a story once about a man who was stuck in a cell, and there was this dripping pipe that made a constant noise and it was starting to drive him insane. He eventually decided that the only way he was going to save his sanity was to fall in love with that sound, and pretend it was music. It worked! I guess this is similar to the moral of your story.

I always liked winter. For everything bad there’s good. It gets dark early, but there’s christmas lights, and late nights at the pub, and so many other things. Like you say, it all depends on how you look at it, whether you see the good or the bad. I haven’t seen the Will Smith film, so thanks for the suggestion.

My grandmother used to always tell me that everything in our lives had a season. I never quite understood that until I was older, but I know now that she compared the different stages of life to the different seasons. When she was young, healthy and happy, it was spring and summer. As she got older and had more struggles, this was fall. Then when health problems began and she was in the last stages of her life, to her this was winter. But in each stage of her life she had happy memories just like there are things to enjoy in each season. This may have been a simple way of viewing things, but to me it is also a beautiful way of understanding life.

Winter isn’t good or evil, is it? It just is, it is a result of the planet’s orbit, and good or evil is entirely a quality that we attribute to it. People tend to anthropomorphise inanimate things far too much. Just look at how they view 2016, a lot of bad things happened in that period, but it doesn’t make the period of time passing bad itself. After all, some good happened as well, it just matters what you focus on.

It’s very cold where I live right now and most days haven’t gotten out of the single digits. I’ve never been a fan of winter and this is the time of the year that I’m always down. I would love to have an outlook like yours and think of winter as a good time, but I just don’t know how to get there. To me, the only thing good about it is that I get to spend sometime inside and get things done around the house.
