Some of the best jobs I ever had and the best companies I ever worked for were at companies and for bosses who listened to ideas and valued what different team members brought to the table. I have never felt so valued as an employee as I did when I had bosses who really cared about what I had to say and truly communicated that they wanted my ideas. The worst jobs were jobs where I felt I had no voice and my thoughts didn’t really matter.

Listening to employees is not a strong suit for the management team where I work. Ideas work best when they come from someone who is liked or at the appropriate level. In the minds of management, your level is innately tied to your ability to have ideas. It’s very frustrating for individuals at the lower levels who feel they’ll never be taken seriously and they end up jaded by the time they get to a level where their suggestions matter.

As Bakersdozen has indicated, most companies could really not give two hoots about what lower echelon has to say. I think that most bosses could really benefit from active listening and not only help the company, but increase employee retention.
